In April of 2019, the University of Alabama at Birmingham premiered an original musical following the life of a man stolen from his home and separated from his community. After many years of workshops and staged readings, the world saw Ota Benga's story justly told. I was honored to be the dramaturg for this process, and I believe Ota's story is one that must be shared. Please browse my dramaturgical findings and allow me to introduce you to Ota Benga.
Share my passions
My freshman year of college, I not only had the opportunity to work with an amazing guest director at University of Alabama at Birmingham, but thanks to an assignment for one of my classes, I also had the opportunity to interview him. Luke Harlan, an alum of UAB and Yale graduate, directed my first college show, Vinegar Tom, and quickly became one of my biggest inspirations as a director.
